People like you.   About the role Lead the commercial management of contracts, comprising outsourced, managed service and individual supplier agreements across the IS organisation.  The aim is to optimise the commercial framework in support of the Gas Distribution strategy and contributing to the achievement of business objectives.   
  • Accountable for a proportion of commercial performance of IT contracts totalling ~£100m per annum.
  • Maintains relationships with senior managers across the National Grid organisation including Legal Teams, Shared Services, Finance and Procurement
  • Maintains relationships at senior management level within supplier organisations to Gas Distribution
  • Maintains relationships with leaders across the IT function including; Service Management, Solution Delivery, Service Strategy, Office of the CIO and Digital Risk and Security. 
  Key accountabilities:
  • Develop and deliver a commercial framework to enable the group to optimise contract value through a consistent, professional approach to contract management and relationship management.
  • Work closely with the wider Gas Distribution business to embed a commercially oriented culture to contract management within the wider IT function.
  • Develop a contract management strategy that ensures a standard, commercial approach to gaining maximum a commercially oriented culture to contract management value from contracts and deliverables.
  • Act as the senior accountable owner for the development, ownership and maintenance of market intelligence data that enables commercial decision making in relation to all aspects of contract management within the function.
  • Develop and maintain effective and commercially oriented relationships with a wide range of vendors to drive value through individual and collaboration of partner organisations.
  • Lead on the management of contract claims, ensuring that issues are resolved quickly, in Gas Distributions best interest and without negative impact on third party relationships and Gas Distributions reputation.
  • Support and challenge IT Programme and Project Managers to manage IS delivery programmes in line with the commercial objectives in order to ensure best value and the highest levels of performance
  • Define procurement requirements and ensure these are communicated accurately and effectively to the procurement function within Gas Distribution and Partner organisations as applicable.
  • Identify and mitigate commercial risks, ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and identify value adding opportunities to enhance supplier relationships.
  • Ensures that appropriate commercial governance meetings are held both internally and externally to facilitate the commercially oriented culture to contract management, to ensure the benefits and value from contracts are tracked and delivered and to progress commercial issues and risks promptly.
  • Promotes awareness of and commitment to IT asset control and distribution responsibilities and benefits for National Grid.
  • Assists with the definition and operation of effective financial control and decision making processes, especially in the areas of service provision, projects and component cost models and the allocation and apportionment of all incurred IT costs. Implements charging where appropriate.

  • Knowledge of IS Operating models and the key functions and interdependencies.  The capability to act as the “agent for change” on a transformational level.
  • Methods and techniques for managing contracts to ensure that suppliers adhere to agreed contract requirements, particularly large enterprise wide IS Managed Service Agreements.
  • Methods and techniques for negotiating contracts for the supply of IT products and services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general contract law principles and awareness of key issues in contracts such as limitations of liability, indemnities, warranties and termination rights.
  • The purpose and composition of a service level agreement (SLA); the relationship between an SLA and a contract for the supply of services.
  • Specific standards associated with the IT practitioner's current role.  Examples: health and safety standards, departmental programming and accessibility standards, organisational network performance standards, service desk procedures, corporate quality and change management processes, ITIL
  • The products and/or services supplied to own organisation by external suppliers. Examples: Maintenance of IT infrastructure, maintenance of IT applications, internet connectivity services, system development, software product.
  • The business environment relating to own sphere of work (own organisation and/or closely associated organisations, such as customers, suppliers, partners), in particular those aspects of the business which the specialism is to support  (i.e. localised organisational awareness from a technical perspective).
  • Principles, methods, techniques and tools for the preparation and monitoring of budgets to minimise costs and ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • The analysis and reporting of financial costs and forecasts against budgets.
  Qualifications and experience:
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Breadth and depth of experience in sourcing and contract management, ideally within an IS environment
  • Ideally a member of a relevant professional body eg. MCIPS.
