Community & education

At National Grid we're passionate about inspiring the scientists and engineers of the future. We know employers have a lot of work to do to educate schoolchildren on what a career in engineering can look like.

Our work in the community

We do more than provide energy. We touch lives. We play an important role in the communities we serve by getting involved in a range of national and local community projects. Through our employee volunteering programme, you can make a difference to the people in your area and learn all kinds of new skills. That's got to be good for everyone.

Education and skills

Our business is science and engineering based, so we’ll encourage you to volunteer in relevant local science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) projects, especially in local schools. By firing young people’s interest in STEM subjects, we aim to tackle the skills gap in this area and create a talented group of potential employees.

Energy and environment

Protecting the environment is integral to our business. You can take part in conservation-based team building at one of our environmental education centres or with one of our environmental organisation partners. You can also volunteer to work with local schools supporting energy efficiency projects.

Community investment

In the UK our employees provided over 14,000 hours of voluntary support to community projects across the country. We have recently come to the end of our two year’s working with Macmillan Cancer Support as our employee chosen charity. Our employees raised over £700,000 with the money being put towards fuel grants to help people living with or recovering from cancer.

Links to education

At National Grid we're passionate about inspiring the scientists and engineers of the future. We know employers have a lot of work to do to educate schoolchildren on what a career in engineering can look like.

Careers Lab

In 2013 we launched Careers Lab to bridge the gap between schools and the world of work. We're getting more employees from businesses of all sizes into classrooms to deliver inspiring careers lessons side by side with teachers. It's helping the next generation think more widely about their future working life.

Engineering our Future

Our 'Engineering our Future' report revealed that young people often struggle to visualise what professional engineers do – and teachers often struggle to explain. So we've bolstered our employee volunteering in schools through 'Imagineering' and 'School Power' – far-sighted initiatives that enrich the teaching of energy, forces and materials.

Think Power

National Grid is a partner on the ‘National Skills Academy for Power’ (NSAP). Critical to the training and development needs of the power sector, the NSAP will increase the attractiveness and importance of the sector, deliver a sustainable pipeline of talent and help build a world-class workforce with better skills than ever.
